About PTG
Origin Story
Time flies! I can't believe it is now over a year since Power Tool Girls was first conceived. My family & friends have heard this story countless times, but now that Power Tool Girls is out in the wild, it is time to write down some of my ramblings…
So how did this begin? Like many great stories, this one began on a hike! A dear friend of mine (Hey Jo!) suggested we spend a week in Alice Springs hiking the Larapinta trail. I needed a reset and was on the verge of launching my own consulting firm "Scott, Swift & French", the name a homage to three of my heroes. The timing was perfect.
One morning as we set out to tackle Mount Sonder hoping to catch the sunrise from its summit, the conversation drifted towards our experiences with tradies. The difficulties finding someone to tackle small jobs, the anxiety with hiring someone random from the internet, the behaviour of some of these tradies when they show up for a quote and find a woman…
Wouldn't it be great if someone could just show us how to use an impact driver so we can fix things ourselves! We sighed, we laughed, we carried on with our hike.

Picture of the sunrise taken from the summit of Mt Sonder in the Northern Territory. The place where Power Tool Girls was conceived! Fun fact: the colour palette behind the brand is derived from this photo!
Back home in Melbourne, I got back to Scott, Swift & French but it seemed less urgent. Something else far more important needed to be done.
Power Tool Girls is an ambitious endeavour. Australia, like much of the developed world, is in the middle of a tradie shortage. Home owners struggle to find trustworthy support when needed. There is a demographic shift taking place underneath all of it: older women living alone, single mums, immigrants who find it intimidating to invite men they don't know into their home. Growing numbers of female tradies struggling to find apprenticeships or having to put up with sex based discrimination and harassment.
Power Tool Girls is the platform that connects home owners with high quality, trustworthy female tradespeople! Our mission is to accelerate the progress of women in trades. We are a community built on building each other…
And we have only just started.
With love,
